So many people are searching for happiness. But, what is it? No, really, what is it? Is it meaning? Equality? Love?
The Huffington Post published an article on Valentine’s Day about this very topic. How perfect! The article does a great job illustrating the common difficulties and misunderstandings that our culture struggles with regarding how we can be happy. It’s easy to get caught up in the facade that wealth creates happiness, or that poverty creates the lack of happiness. There are too many examples that thwart this idea. Nor does freedom from challenges create happiness, as it cannot come simply from the lack of problems. Rather, it is something else entirely.
I agree wholeheartedly with the article’s conclusions that happiness is dependent upon three significant factors: Gratitude, Service to Others, and Focus. Science is even validating these truths.
Happiness is about how we connect with our lives and those we care about. It is the good we create in and around ourselves that has the greatest impact on how we feel. So, how grateful are we for what we DO have? How often do we think of others and what we can do for them? Are we engaged in our lives instead of living on autopilot? These are valuable qualities to consciously choose to have in our lives. And that’s the kicker. We need to choose to be happy.
Sometimes, however, the choice to be happy is more difficult than it seems it ought to be. There are times that happiness seems impossible. Why is that? Why does it feel like happiness is out of reach?
Another level of happiness needs to be considered. There are things at our core – beliefs and programming – that either allow or fight against us feeling happy. We recognize them in thoughts and emotions that bring us down. We feel the resistance as we attempt to move toward happiness and other goals.
Core beliefs are the inner programming that help determine the levels of happiness, success, health, and more that we experience in our lives. Did you know that you have a thermostat inside of you regulating your life? It’s true! You’ve inherited limiting patterns from your ancestors as well as adopted patterns throughout your life. The former, you weren’t around consciously to choose or not choose. The latter, you were likely subject to without sufficient tools to protect yourself. Either way, they exist and they contribute to or limit your joy.
The good news is that all is not lost. You don’t have to be a slave to these patterns for the rest of your life. You can change them! Science validates these truths, too. You can actually reprogram the negative core beliefs to work for you instead of working against you. You have the power. And just like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, you’ve had it all along. You can heal those patterns and move forward toward your goals without all that resistance.
